-
1. MOPO50: Household energy
The 50Wh MOPO50 Battery provides low-income households with basic energy access for lighting, phone charging and Direct Current (DC) appliances.
-
2. MOPOMax: Generator replacement
The 1kWh MOPOMax provides a pay-per-use service that replaces petrol generators. Customers can run 230V Alternating Current (AC) appliances and no longer have to pay high upfront costs for noisy, polluting generators.
-
3. MOPOMax: e-mobility
Using the 1kWh MOPOMax Battery, MOPO technology provides battery swap for motorbike taxi riders from solar powered hubs. The system is compatible with multiple e-motorbike manufacturers.
How does the MOPO ecosystem work?
MOPO is more than just a battery company; it offers a comprehensive suite of services that encompass the entire infrastructure technology lifecycle. This includes everything from product development and supply chain management to manufacturing, firmware, software, fintech solutions, logistics, installation, agent and customer operations, and ultimately, end-of-life processes such as reuse and recycling. Established in 2013, MOPO has achieved this integration through long-term strategic planning and investment. Here’s an overview of how interactions between agents and customers are managed:
1.
Agents purchase MOPO activation credits via Mobile Money, which are then loaded onto their NFC wristbands. These wristbands act as an 'e-wallet' exclusively for the MOPO Platform, allowing agents to rent MOPO Batteries even in areas without mobile phone network coverage.
2.
Agents register first-time customers and provide them with a unique NFC wristband.
3.
Customers pay the agent in cash, with the customer price set higher than the agent activation price. This allows agents to earn a cash commission directly from the customer, while MOPO avoids handling cash directly.
4.
Agents activate the MOPO Battery using NFC, and the entire transaction is tracked using MOPO’s patented offline IoT (Internet of Things) technology.
5.
After 24 hours, the MOPO Battery automatically stops delivering energy. The agent then has an additional 24 hours (a total of 48 hours from activation) to collect the battery.
6.
If the MOPO Battery is not collected within 48 hours, the agent is automatically fined from their MOPO activation credit account, incentivising efficient asset management.
MOPO HUBS
Solar power stations for MOPO Battery distribution by local agents
MOPO operates hundreds of solar-powered hubs across Africa.
Each hub, typically housing hundreds of MOPO batteries, serves a diverse customer base ranging from frequent renters who use the service multiple times daily to occasional users who rent once every few weeks. This broad customer spectrum ensures stable asset utilisation and reliable income across the portfolio.
The geographical reach of these hubs varies from 10 meters to 10 kilometres, depending on population density and local economic conditions. Hub density is also diverse, with some towns having a single hub while others boast up to 20 in a concentrated area.
MOPO’s agent model enhances scalability through incentivised commission structures, utilising local expertise to identify optimal hub locations. African MOPO Install Teams, each capable of setting up one new hub per week, managing the installations, ensuring efficient and rapid expansion.
Importantly, the hubs operate in a closed-loop system, ensuring the recycling of end-of-life MOPO batteries.
GENERATE
Our solar-powered MOPO Hubs are conveniently located for our customers within their community. An average hub provides four full-time jobs for local women and men as MOPO Agents.
DISTRIBUTE
MOPO Agents distribute batteries to customers, managing relationships and ensuring timely return of batteries. MOPO Batteries are secure by design and only discharge energy upon agent payment through the MOPO App.
USE
Customers use the energy for a range of purposes, for example, MOPO50 for phone charging and lighting and MOPOMax for replacing generators and powering electric vehicles.
MOPO Platform
Cutting edge technology delivering end-to-end operational visibility & people management
MOPO's proprietary technology platform, developed in-house, offers comprehensive remote management and real-time monitoring capabilities for all its assets, agents and customers. This encompasses agent performance evaluation tools and insightful data on customer behaviour as well as integration with local mobile money platforms that streamline payment processes and eliminate the need to handle physical cash.
It also enables live tracking of MOPO Batteries from their status in charge to their deployment in new hubs and assignment to agents. This fosters a light-touch management approach centred on performance incentives, driving down operating expenses, and facilitating rapid scalability.
Blended IoT technology
The MOPO Network incorporates IoT technologies across its products, including NFC, Bluetooth (BLE), Captive Wi-Fi networks, 3G/4G/NB-IoT, GPS in order to build up a complete picture in an offline environment.
Decentralised and offline-first
MOPO’s blended communications technology enables the MOPO Network to operate in an offline-first, decentralised manner, with efficient data synchronisation performed when possible.
Countless applications
MOPO’s software stack and decentralised activation credit management approach has countless applications in the African economy, as the transaction cost on the MOPO Network is low.
