30 Million Battery Rentals Completed
Milestone signals a new era for energy access in Sub Saharan Africa
Overview
MOPO, a UK-based technology company pioneering sustainable energy access, is proud to announce its 30 millionth battery rental, marking a major milestone in its mission to supply affordable sustainable energy to millions of individuals and businesses across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Through a simple pay-as-you-go model, MOPO is changing the energy supply paradigm on the continent. The battery rental system, powered by centralised solar charging hubs run by local agents, allows customers to rent clean, smart MOPO batteries in their communities eliminating the need for upfront investment, high-cost infrastructure, or consumer credit. The circular system ensures batteries are paid for, tracked, reused, and eventually recycled, making the solution both sustainable and scalable.
Energy is a critical component for economic empowerment and MOPO’s proprietary battery offerings are tailored to different levels of energy demand. The MOPO50 battery provides basic household energy for lighting, phone charging, and DC appliances, while the MOPOMax delivers one kilowatt-hour of 230V AC power, enough to replace noisy, polluting, and costly petrol generators. By facilitating rentals in areas of unstable or no grid infrastructure, in much the same way people might purchase fuel or access generator-powered charging points, the experience is intuitive and easy to adopt. The 30 millionth milestone proves that the MOPO model is working.
Chris Longbottom, CEO of MOPO, commented: “By removing the financial and logistical barriers that prevent access to clean energy, MOPO is transforming energy delivery across underserved regions. Our simple but unique agent-driven, tech-enabled model makes solar energy flexible, accessible, and affordable for the people who need it most, positioning MOPO as a pioneer in Africa’s clean energy transition.
“We’re proud to have been recently shortlisted for the Africa Sustainable Futures Awards in the Access to Electricity and Infrastructure category – a powerful endorsement of our business and the impact we’re making across the six countries where we operate.
