Our Model

MOPO’s singular energy-as-a-service model can provide affordable and reliable power to low-income off-grid customers.

We identify communities with limited or unreliable access to electricity and establish a local solar-powered MOPOHub.

The MOPOHub offers a range of energy solutions: MOPO50 for daily essentials and MOPOMax for virtually all home and business appliances.

We engage local people as MOPO Agents who rent batteries and serve customers at the hub.

Customers can start renting MOPO batteries immediately.

Customers return their MOPO batteries to a MOPOHub or agent and can rent new MOPO batteries whenever they need them.

Why MOPO is Unique

Flexible Energy-As-A-Service Offering

  • Customers access energy without needing to own expensive assets, eliminating the risk of breakages and degraded batteries.
  • By removing upfront costs, lump-sum payments, and credit checks, the MOPO model makes electricity accessible to customers who are excluded from bank or PAYGo financing.
  • As customers are not tied to a fixed asset, they can increase or reduce the amount of energy they use as their needs and incomes change.

The Most Affordable Distributed Energy Solution

  • An independent study found that 9/10 MOPO customers in Sierra Leone live below the international poverty line. The poorest customers can afford a MOPO solution, leaving no one behind.
  • Ultra-affordable, flexible payments fit customers’ budgets, ensuring even the lowest-income households can access a range of power options.
  • Customers can rent MOPO in cash, whenever they want. Customers can stop renting, whenever they want.

Flexible Levels of Energy That Allows Customers to Climb the Energy Ladder

  • Customers can start with MOPO50 for basic energy needs and scale up over time to MOPOMax, MOPOPlus, and MOPOGrid. MOPO can reach 100% of a community.
  • MOPO’s portable battery solutions support energy needs both at home and at work, allowing customers to move energy between different parts of their daily lives.
  • MOPO’s hubs are flexible community power infrastructure and can adapt over time with new and additional MOPO batteries or MOPOGrid connections that reflect the changing needs of each community.

Modular, Rapid to Deploy Hubs

  • MOPO Hubs last ten years or more. MOPO Hubs are installed on existing local buildings, with no bureaucratic delays. MOPO batteries can be moved between hubs to meet changing demand.
  • MOPO Hubs can scale up or down the number of MOPO batteries or MOPOGrid connections and solar installed.
  • MOPO Hubs can be moved or installed in a day.

End-to-End Hardware and Software Ownership

  • MOPO owns, designs, and manages its hardware and software technology. End-to-end control allows MOPO to continuously improve its products and services based on real-world customer and operational insights.
  • MOPO controls every element of its hardware, from smart remote energy management technology to durable product design built for the realities of African markets. Because MOPO retains ownership of its MOPO batteries and hubs throughout their lifecycle, it recycles all batteries responsibly at end of life.
  • MOPO’s proprietary software platform tracks every MOPO battery, agent, and rental in real time, allowing the company to manage energy demand dynamically and respond quickly to changing customer needs across entire communities.

Jobs and Economic Growth

  • 99% of MOPO personnel are African, creating quality jobs in underserved communities where they are needed most.
  • While MOPO delivers the lowest-cost form of energy access, its community-based model also creates more local jobs than any other energy access model.
  • Our portable MOPO batteries allow customers to take energy from work to home and everywhere in between. MOPO batteries can power virtually all common business appliances used across Africa, from laptops and freezers to power tools and machinery.
